Using email addresses apparently stolen from an online police forum, the cyber rebels sent a manifesto to several current and former British police officers.

A text of the missive seen by The Associated Press on Thursday pleads with officers "not to support the traitors against us."

Anonymous is a sprawling, Internet-based insurgency responsible for a slew of cyberattacks, Web stunts, and eye-catching protests over the years.

Its activities have drawn international police attention and scores of supporters have been detained in Europe, the United States, and elsewhere.

London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement that it was investigating how Anonymous obtained the officers' email addresses.

Democratic donors energize "Super PACs" as U.S. election nears

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic donors gave unprecedented amounts of money in September to their party's three main "Super PACs," federal disclosures revealed on Friday, a reflection of how wealthy Democrats' reluctance to give to such groups has faded in the weeks before the November 6 election.

A fundraising laggard for much of the campaign, the political action committee (PAC) backing President Barack Obama raised more than a rival group backing Republican Mitt Romney, the second consecutive month the Democratic group has done so.

The pro-Obama group Priorities USA Action raised $15.2 million in September, compared with $14.8 million for the pro-Romney group Restore Our Future, according to new filings with the Federal Election Commission.

Restore Our Future, a formidable advertising force whose attack ads on Romney's Republican rivals helped him secure the party's presidential nomination, began the crucial month of October with $16.6 million in cash on hand.

On Saturday, Priorities' filings are due to reveal its cash on hand and donors for September.

Republican PACs have invested far more in advertising than Obama's backers, spending $84.1 million since September 10 alone, according to a Reuters analysis of disclosures through October 18. Democratic-aligned groups spent $23.1 million in that time.

Early this year, many Democratic donors were reluctant to donate to PACs supporting their party's candidates because they disliked the idea of contributing to attack ads and other negative advertising - a staple of spending by groups known as "Super PACs" because they have no limits on how much they can raise and spend.

In recent months, fundraising for Democratic PACs has accelerated to counter the waves of anti-Obama and anti-Democratic ads from Republican groups.

Priorities in September received $2 million from founder of Newsweb Corp Fred Eychaner; $1.5 million from billionaire hedge fund manager of Renaissance Technologies Corp James Simons; and $1 million each from film director Steven Spielberg, DreamWorks Animation SKG Inc CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg and New York lawyer David Boies Jr, according to filings.

The group had $7.3 million in cash on hand at the end of last month, Saturday's filing showed. Spending nearly three times less than Priorities in September, Restore Our Future started October with $16.6 million.

CONTROL OF CONGRESS

The Democratic PACs seeking to help candidates win House of Representatives and Senate seats also saw donations rise in September.

Majority PAC, the group helping Democratic candidates for the Senate, announced on Friday its biggest cash haul since its creation in 2010: $10.4 million in September, and another $9.7 million during the first week of October.

Its sister group, House Majority PAC, also had its best month in September and is on track to double that in October, an aide to the group said.

Democrats need a net gain of 25 seats to become the majority party in the 435-seat House, an outcome that most pollsters see as unlikely. Republicans need a net gain of four seats to take control of the Senate. Most pollsters also see that as unlikely.

Scores of Republican PACs and tax-exempt groups have been formed to support Republican House and Senate candidates. Tax-exempt groups do not disclose their finances; disclosures of the most influential Super PAC, American Crossroads, are due later on Saturday.

Restore Our Future, the PAC that supports Romney, reported on Friday that its largest donors included Texas home builder Bob Perry and billionaire Harold Simmons.

Perry gave $2 million in September and leads all donors with $10 million contributed to Restore Our Future during this election cycle. Simmons gave $500,000 for the month, increasing his total to the group to $1.3 million.

Republicans showed greater fundraising strength at the party level in September.

The Republican National Committee raised $48.4 million and ended September with $82.6 million in cash on hand. Its Democratic counterpart took out a large loan.

The Democratic National Committee, which has focused on races for the Senate and House, raised $20.3 million in September and borrowed $10.5 million. It ended September $20.5 million in debt, according to its filing with the FEC.

A DNC representative declined to comment on the reason for the debt and how it might affect Democratic candidates in the final two weeks before the election. The party had $4.6 million in cash on hand heading into October.

The RNC reported $9.9 million in debt at the end of September, with its $82.6 million in cash on hand.

Unlike the DNC, the Republican Party has been working closely with its presidential candidate, Romney, who heavily relies on its grassroots operation. On the Democratic side, Obama's campaign has a huge grassroots organization itself and does not need such help from its party.

New treatment method for children with brain tumours

ScienceDaily (Oct. 15, 2012) ? Children who undergo brain radiation therapy run a significant risk of suffering from permanent neurocognitive adverse effects. These adverse effects are due to the fact that the radiation often encounters healthy tissue. This reduces the formation of new cells, particularly in the hippocampus -- the part of the brain involved in memory and learning.

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg's Sahlgrenska Academy have used a model study to test newer radiation therapy techniques which could reduce these harmful adverse effects. The researchers based their study on a number of paediatric patients who had undergone conventional radiation treatment for medulloblastoma, a form of brain tumour that almost exclusively affects children, and simulated treatment plans using proton therapy techniques and newer photon therapy techniques.

Each treatment plan was personalised by physician Malin Blomstrand, physicist Patrik Brodin and their colleagues. The results show that the risk of neurocognitive adverse effects can be reduced significantly using the new radiation treatment techniques, particularly proton therapy.

"This could mean a better quality of life for children who are forced to undergo brain radiation therapy," says Malin Blomstrand.

Disaster Recovery Planning For Smaller Organisations | Business ...

Planning and preparing for disaster recovery is all about determining an organisation?s tolerance for loss. How much tolerance does it have for downtime, lost data, and lost revenue or profit? The cost an organisation incurs to maintain a suitable disaster recovery plan depends largely on how closely it relies on IT for its revenue.

A company like Amazon or Google relies so heavily on its IT infrastructure that its tolerance for outages is, for all intents and purposes, zero. A motel in rural Alaska, on the other hand, might have a higher tolerance for outages or even data loss.

It should go without saying then, that the first step in creating a disaster recovery plan should be a thorough analysis to determine just how long your organisation can survive without the bulk of its IT infrastructure. For most organisations the outcome of the analysis will show that they can?t survive for very long. Amazon and Google have almost unlimited budgets for their disaster preparedness initiatives, but small and medium size businesses must carefully weigh the cost of implementing disaster recovery solutions against their tolerance for loss.

There are several reasons an organisation might want to consider SaaS options and disaster recovery should definitely be part of that equation. Having your line-of-business software served and accessed in the cloud takes your data offsite. There, the data is backed up and replicated by companies able to implement expensive disaster recovery solutions by leveraging economies of scale.

In the event of a fire or flood at a main office location, employees would be able to access data and line-of-business applications from any computer connected to the internet. While this might not offer complete business continuity, it can let employees complete back office tasks while ensuring data integrity.

2. Colocation

Some organisations use line-of-business applications that are not offered as SaaS. Others might find SaaS cost-prohibitive or simply wish to maintain control of their own data. For companies like this, colocation services can offer a cost-effective way to mitigate risk from disaster. Colocation services generally offer either servers and storage space or rack space for an organisation?s own servers.

Much like SaaS, using colocation facilities allows organisations to outsource their disaster recovery initiatives by locating hardware with important data in a secure data-centre. Colocation services take advantage of economies of scale by aggregating disaster recovery for all of their clients. In the event of a disaster at a main office, important data and services remain intact and accessible via remote connection.

3. Remote IT management

The recurring theme here is moving data offsite and taking advantage of the economies of scale that aggregation offers for disaster avoidance and recovery. SaaS and Colocation bring with them the need for remote support solutions. In the face of disaster with either SaaS or Colocation services in place, a likely scenario would be one in which employees work from home connecting to their business applications in the cloud.

Inevitably, this will require extra work for help desk technicians and system administrators. Computers connecting to SaaS solutions may require special configurations. Given that techs are already facing the clean-up required from the disaster, supporting offsite users will only add to their collective headache. Remote support software will allow techs and sysadmins to access these remote machines quickly without leaving their desks. This is a time-saving measure whose importance cannot be overstated.

For organisations opting to use colocation services, this goes doubly. A robust remote support solution is an absolutely necessary component. Remote support is not just a matter of remotely controlling offsite computers. Another important component of remote support software is the ability to perform remote administration tasks on computers.

Remote administration tasks include the following: starting/stopping services, managing disk drives and volumes, viewing/clearing event logs, managing Active Directory Objects and Group Policies, and supporting sleeping or crashed hardware. The ability to perform these tasks remotely and from one console will save sys admins a bundle of time, especially when faced with a disaster. A good remote support solution will bundle all of these features into one easy-to-use console.

In addition, organisations that are supported by a mobile IT administration tool can help improve business continuity by allowing their IT pros to monitor, troubleshoot and triage IT technologies when a destructive event requires them to work remotely from a mobile device.?Solutions that allow remote access to IT departments and applications can be an integral component in a comprehensive backup plan by ensuring secure connections during disasters or emergencies.

When creating recovery plans, smaller organisations should give serious consideration to these cost- and time-saving measures. They are by no means a comprehensive recovery solution, but they can help smaller organisations save costs while using basically the same technologies as large companies.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's supreme leader said Friday that his country's military is ready to deter any attack and warned enemies of the Islamic Republic to abandon any "thoughts of invasion."

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's remarks came as tensions are rising in the region over a possible strike by Israel against Iran's nuclear facilities.

The U.S. and its allies accuse Iran of using its civilian nuclear program as a cover to develop nuclear weapons. Tehran has denied the charges, saying its program is peaceful and geared toward generating electricity and producing radioisotopes to treat cancer patients.

"The readiness of the Iranian armed forces is such ... it will deter the enemy from harboring any thoughts of invasion," state TV quoted Khamenei as saying during a visit to a military base in the country's northeast.

Israel has not ruled out a military option against Iran's suspect program and has recently said that time is running out before Iran obtains a nuclear weapon. Israel considers a nuclear-armed Iran to be a threat to its existence, citing Iranian denials of the Holocaust, calls for Israel's destruction, development of missiles capable of striking the Jewish state and its support for hostile Arab militant groups.

Washington and others favor a mix of sanctions and diplomacy to try to force Tehran to curb its nuclear program.

Khamenei, who has final say on all state matters in the country, said Iran "is not seeking to invade anyone but will not succumb to any attack or act of aggression."

As Khamenei visited the base Friday, his host Gen. Mohmmad Ali Jafari of the powerful Revolutionary Guard said the troops' naval and missile power has now been raised to a "strategic deterrence level."

Iran has long sought a self-sufficient military program and top officials frequently make announcements about the country's strides in military technology.

Tehran has recently said it has upgraded the accuracy of its missiles with a range of 2,000 kilometers (1,250 miles), which covers much of the Middle East, including Israel and U.S. bases in the Gulf.

However, it is virtually impossible to independently determine the actual capabilities or combat worthiness of Iran's arsenal.

Separately, the foreign ministry said a recent U.N. report that condemned Tehran of "deeply troubling" human rights violations was politically motivated and influenced by western adversaries including the United States.

The report, obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday, said many of the government's violations were "systemic in nature." It also called for an extensive, impartial, and independent investigation into the violence in the months that followed the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2009.

We?ve known for months that outdoor lifestyle retailer Cabela?s was planning a Lone Tree store. Now we know exactly where.

Sidney, Neb.-based Cabela?s (NYSE: CAB) bought a 10.68-acre plot of land on the southwest corner of Interstate 25 and Ridgegate Parkway for $3.72 million. The purchase was first reported Thursday by Xceligent Inc.

It will be the national chain?s second store in the Denver area. The other store will be in Thornton, on the southeast corner of 144th Avenue and Interstate 25. Dirt recently started moving at that site and an official ground-breaking ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Oct. 31.

City of Lone Tree officials told Xceligent, a commercial real estate information services company, that the store submitted plans in March calling for a 105,000-square-foot store.

Southlands Town Center sells for $102.5M

Though the deal is several weeks old, the sales price recently came to light.

New York, N.Y.-based Northwood Investors LLC bought the Southlands Town Center, 6155 S. Main St., Aurora, near E-470 and East Smoky Hill Road. The sales price was $102.5 million, according to industry sources. The seller was BlackRock, a New York-based REIT.

It was the private investment firm?s first purchase in Colorado.

Northwood Retail, a subsidiary of Northwood Investors, will lease and manage the 900,000-square-foot Southlands Town Center, which has AMC Theaters, Sports Authority and Bed Bath Beyond among its anchors.

Exposure to traffic air pollution in infancy impairs lung function in children

ScienceDaily (Oct. 12, 2012) ? Exposure to ambient air pollution from traffic during infancy is associated with lung function deficits in children up to eight years of age, particularly among children sensitized to common allergens, according to a new study.

"Earlier studies have shown that children are highly susceptible to the adverse effects of air pollution and suggest that exposure early in life may be particularly harmful," said researcher G?ran Pershagen, MD, PhD, professor at the Karolinska Institutet Institute of Environmental Medicine in Stockholm, Sweden. "In our prospective birth cohort study in a large population of Swedish children, exposure to traffic-related air pollution during infancy was associated with decreases in lung function at age eight, with stronger effects indicated in boys, children with asthma and particularly in children sensitized to allergens."

The findings were published online ahead of print publication in the American Thoracic Society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

The study included more than 1,900 children who were followed from birth through age eight with repeated questionnaires, spirometry and immunoglobulin E measurements. Outdoor concentrations of particulate matter from road traffic were estimated for residential, daycare and school addresses using dispersion modeling, a mathematical simulation of how air pollutants disperse in the atmosphere.

A 5th to 95th percentile difference in time-weighted exposure to outdoor concentrations of particulate matter from road traffic during the first year of life was associated with a reduced forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) of -59.3 mL (95% confidence interval (CI): -113.0 to -5.6) at age eight. This negative association was particularly pronounced in children who were sensitized to common inhalant and/or food allergens and also seemed stronger among boys and among children with asthma.

Exposure to traffic-related air pollution after the first year of life appeared to have less impact on subsequent lung function.

The study had a few limitations. Calculations of particulate matter concentrations were only performed for the year 2004 and were extrapolated to the other years of follow-up, and some miscalculation of individual exposure levels was likely.

"Our study shows that early exposure to traffic-related air pollution has long-term adverse effects on respiratory health in children, particularly among atopic children," concluded Dr. Pershagen. "These results add to a large body of evidence demonstrating the detrimental effects of air pollution on human health."

Single fatherhood is a challenge many arachnids undertake, guarding eggs laid by females despite the costs to their own health and mating benefits, but the news may not be all bad for these dads.

New research now shows that, in one species of spiders, males exclusively responsible for guarding eggs actually enjoy survival benefits rather than suffer losses to health or mating privileges. The study, published Oct. 10 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Gustavo Santos Requena and colleagues from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, evaluates the costs and benefits of exclusive paternal care, the rarest form of parental investment in nature, in the harvestman spider Iporangaia pustulosa.

The researchers tracked spiders in the forests of southeastern Brazil over the course of a year to observe how caring behavior in males affected their chances of survival or body condition. Though caring males feed very rarely and lose body condition while guarding eggs, the authors found that these spiders suffered no long-term decrease in fitness compared to females or non-caring males. Their sedentary behavior during the caring period also makes them less likely to be eaten by predators, reducing their mortality risk. The authors also suggest that providing females cost-free care for their offspring might make caring males more attractive to females, thereby improving their chances for reproductive success.

According to the authors, their results suggest that the reduction in mortality risk, combined with the genetic advantages of improving survival of their offspring, may have played important roles in favoring the evolution of paternal care in insects.
