International Marketing: Chapter 19 (Negotiating With International ...

Consider the aisatsu (a meeting or formal greeting for high-level executives typical in Japan). Such face-to-face negotiations are an omnipresent activity in international commerce. Once global marketing strategies have been formulated, once marketing research has been conducted to support those strategies, and once product/service, pricing, promotion, and place decisions have been made, then the focus of managers turns to implementation of the plans. In international business such plans are almost always implemented through face-to-face negotiations with business partners and customers from foreign countries. Executives must also negotiate with representatives of foreign governments who might approve a variety of their marketing actions or in fact be the actual ultimate customer for goods and services. One authority on international joint ventures suggests that

a crucial aspect of all international commercial relationships is the negotiation of the original agreement. The seeds of success or failure often are sown at the negotiation table, vis-?-vis (face-to-face), where not only are financial and legal details agreed to but, perhaps more important, the ambiance of cooperation is established. Indeed, the legal details and the structure of international business ventures are almost always modified over time, usually through negotiations. Business negotiations between business partners from the same country can be difficult. The added complication of cross-cultural communication can turn an already daunting task into an impossible one. On the other hand, if cultural differences are taken into account, oftentimes wonderful business agreements can be made that lead to long-term, profitable relationships across borders.

Meticulous mapping and excavations at an ancient cave in the Yucatan Peninsula are revealing the vitality of the site to the ancient Maya for both religious ritual and human survival. The University of Cincinnati research will be a key topic of discussion on Feb. 24, at the annual meeting of the Association of American Geographers in New York.

The city is located in the elevated Puuc Region of the Yucatan in Mexico. The city featuring a great pyramid and other elaborate architecture was built above one of the few cave systems in the region that penetrates the permanent water table. Mapping and excavations of the ancient city revealed a network of cisterns and reservoirs that fed the community's water supply. The cave exploration has discovered hills of broken pottery and charred sacrifices, also indicating the cave was a key religious site that involved worship of the rain gods.

Researcher Nicholas Dunning, a UC professor of geography, says the cave, located in the ancient ruins of the city of Xcoch, was used continuously from at least 800 BC until the 19th century, when it was still used for rituals. UC geography doctoral student Eric Weaver has led a team mapping Xcoch Cave, assisted by other experienced cavers including UC biology graduate students Beth Cortright and Jane Slater.

"This is in a region that has no surface water," says Dunning. "There are only a handful of caves that go deep enough to get to the permanent water table, so for anyplace that's bone dry for five months out of the year, this is a pretty special location."

Two large reservoirs are located in the middle of the city next to the monumental architecture and the smaller reservoirs and cisterns extend into the residential area and surrounding farm land.

Dunning says the area was by far the largest city in the region during the Preclassic Period around 800 BC to 100 AD, but adds that there are significant signs the city was abandoned between 100 AD and 300 AD, most likely due to drought.

"The Maya built a stairway to the cave entrance that we have to crawl in to enter and look for stalagmites cave formations," says Dunning. "Since this is a seasonal climate, the stalagmites act in the way that tree rings do recording the rainfall because they only grow during a part of the year when there's rain."

The field work is far from glamorous. Entering the deep cave involves a good deal of crawling through long, narrow tunnels. The summer expeditions also involve working in hot, humid temperatures that can rise as high as 105 degrees. "The oxygen content is so low, you can't even light a match," says Dunning.

"We found all kinds of broken pottery," Dunning says. "The Maya 'sacrificed' pottery by putting materials in it, then ritually killing it, as a means of releasing its essence, or to receive blessings from the rain gods with their sacrifices," Dunning says. Human and animal remains were also found, but researchers are still exploring whether those remains were sacrifices or burials.

###

Authors on the paper include Dunning, Xcoch project director Michael Smyth, an anthropological archaeologist for The Foundation for Americas Research, Eric Weaver and Philip van Beynen, professor of geography and environmental science at the University of South Florida.

Funding for the project was supported by a grant through the National Science Foundation Arctic Social Science Program awarded to The Foundation for Americas Research.

(AP) ? There appears to be no end in sight for Greg Oden and his troublesome knees.

The Portland Trail Blazers center was scheduled to have arthroscopic surgery to "remove debris" from his left knee. The team announced that the former No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft was to have the surgery Monday in Vail, Colo. The often-injured 7-footer had the same procedure on his right knee earlier this month.

Over the course of his NBA career, Oden has had microfracture surgeries on both knees, surgery to repair a fractured left kneecap and now the two procedures this month.

Oden, who has hot played in an NBA game since Dec. 5, 2009, has appeared in 82 career games for the Blazers, averaging 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds.

It was expected that he might be able to play for the Blazers this season, but a checkup before the start of training camp in December reportedly revealed concerns about a non-weight-bearing ligament in the left knee, further setting back his rehabilitation. Since then, he has turned down repeated interview requests.

Oden was a restricted free agent heading into this season. The Blazers and Oden initially agreed to an $8.9 million qualifying offer for this year, but when the setback was announced the two sides restructured the deal, which was dropped to $1.5 million. He will become an unrestricted free agent following this season.

It was not known when Oden might be able to play again.

Oden was selected over Oklahoma City's Kevin Durant with the top pick in the 2007 draft. The Blazers hoped the former Ohio State star could lead the team ? along with Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge ? to an NBA championship.

But Oden's rookie season was postposed when he required microfracture surgery on his right knee that forced him to miss the 2007-08 season.

Oden's repeated knee problems have drawn comparisons to Sam Bowie, the injury-plagued big man the Blazers selected ahead of Michael Jordan in the 1984 draft.

While Bowie played in 76 games his rookie season, averaging 10 points and 8.6 rebounds, he appeared in just 63 games over the next four seasons because of injuries. He missed the entire 1987-88 season. In all, he had five operations on his legs.

New Jersey Personal Injury Lawyers

This article has been viewed 26 times.

Personal injury law is a specialized branch of law. It is often referred as ?tort law.? Personal Injury refers to any physical, mental or emotional injury caused to an individual. Personal injury can occur due to number of reasons such as slip and fall, auto accidents, exposure to hazardous products, use of defective products, libel, slander, medical malpractice and animal bites.

Personal injury law may vary according to the state where the injury occurred. Generally, all the states have standard procedures for filing the lawsuits. For personal injuries that have temporary effects, it is possible to receive compensation immediately. However, some personal injuries may have dire consequences.

They may permanently disable a person, which may leave him jobless for life. To receive maximum compensation for the losses, it is advisable to hire a lawyer who has all the necessary expertise to deal with personal injury cases. If a personal injury has occurred in Kentucky, it is recommended to assign the case to a lawyer who is aware of the prevailing personal injury laws there.

But before a victim can collect this, they should be able to prove that the defendant is liable and that there is indeed negligence on their part.

The personal injury lawyers help their client get the maximum possible compensation. Some of the personal injury lawyers work on a contingency basis, charging compensation only if their client wins the case.

For receiving claims for losses resulting from medical malpractice, lawyers have to consult medical experts. They investigate and study the medical records of the victims to verify if the damage was actually caused due to negligence of the hospital staff or medical professionals.

Experienced and proficient legal counsel is very important in any personal injury case. New Jersey has a number of such proficient lawyers who help fight personal injury cases. Most people seek references from family and friends, rather than go through the listings available, to select a personal injury lawyer.

Paul Brandeis Raushenbush: Rick Santorum's Political and Biblical Mistake

Sen. Rick Santorum has made a serious mistake.

On Saturday, the presidential hopeful was addressing a group in Ohio when he made the unfortunate assertion that Obama's agenda is:

not about you. It's not about your quality of life. It's not about your jobs. It's about some phony ideal. Some phony theology. Oh, not a theology based on the Bible. A different theology.

The first reason this is a mistake is that Santorum has decided to make the presidential campaign about religious orthodoxy and introduced theology into politics in an agressive way. His less than subtle message is that anyone who believes in the Bible, or even takes the Bible seriously, should be suspect of the President who is serving up 'false teachings' referencing Matthew 7:15 which reads: "Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves."

Santorum's recent comments should be a major turn off to anyone who understand that while all politics are informed by values, religious and secular, we should be very wary when politicians begin to assert religious creedal tests into electoral politics.

Earlier this year I spoke with Senator John Danforth who has thought a lot about religion and politics. Senator Danforth reminded me that:

The language of politics is different than the language of religion -- politics is not religion. The language of religion is based on creedal affirmation, while the language of politics, when it works, is the language of compromise. To confuse politics for religion results in gridlock from the political perspective. To confuse politics for religion from the religious perspective is idolatry.

The second mistake by Sen. Santorum is that his casting stones and judging President Obama's biblical understanding comes at a time when serious questions have to be asked about Sen. Santorum's own grasp of biblical teachings.

At the Detroit Economic Club, Sen. Santorum explained his position on income inequality between the rich and the poor saying: "There is income inequality in America. There always has been and hopefully, and I do say that, there always will be."

Senator Santorum stated this hope for the inequality between the rich and the poor in Detroit -- a city that has suffered from enormous deprivation in the past decades. As Charles Blow reminded readers in the New York Times: "Among the more than 70 cities with populations over 250,000, Detroit's poverty rate topped the list at a whopping 37.6 percent, more than twice the national poverty rate."

Mr. Santorum should be careful in his efforts to score political points using biblical mandates on the same week that he shows such callousness towards the lives of the poor. If we know anything about the concerns of the prophets of the Hebrew Bible and of Jesus of the New Testament, it is that they had harsh words for the rich who grow richer while the poor suffer, and the inequality in America over the last 30 years has become biblically blasphemous.

Rick Santorum was wrong to make his campaign about religious orthodoxy, and wrong again about religious orthodoxy when it came to his own campaign.

Luke 6:20-21 Then he looked up at his disciples and said: 'Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 'Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. 'Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

Luke 6:20-21 Then he looked up at his disciples and said: 'Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

'Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. 'Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.

The origin of photosynthesis revealed by a 'living fossil'

ScienceDaily (Feb. 17, 2012) ? Recently, the complete genome of a glaucophyte alga (Cyanophora paradoxa) has been unraveled by an international consortium led by Dr. Debashish Bhattacharya from Rutgers University (USA). From the University of Freiburg, Dr. Stefan Rensing and Aikaterini Symeonidi (Faculty of Biology), contributed to the analysis of the genome by performing classification and phylogenomic analyses of the encoded transcription factors as well as by checking for and removing genomic contaminations.

The results are published in the current issue of the journal Science.

Todays plants and algae, which form the base of many food chains, contain little green reactors (plastids) that transform gaseous carbon dioxide to sugar by means of photosynthesis. The genome of the early diverging alga C. paradoxa provides conclusive evidence for the fact that more than one billion years ago plastids were acquired in a single evolutionary event, through so-called primary endosymbiosis. The present day plastids we find in land plants, red and green algae and in the glaucophyte algae, such a C. paradoxa, can all be traced back to that single crucial event, enabling eukaryotes to gain energy from sunlight.

The relatively small (~70Mbp) genome was sequenced and analysed by a team of 30 scientists from six countries. Since it represents the earliest lineage to branch off from what became today's land plants, it is expected to be of high value for many future comparative genomics studies.

Leah Tysse didn?t have any formal musical training.

Whitney Houston was her ?teacher.?

?Whitney is the reason I wanted to sing,? said Tysse, a dynamic, Berkeley-based soul-pop vocalist. ?I was a huge fan. Her voice was just impeccable.?

When: Tonight, following the Stockton Thunder game

Where: King?s Room, Stockton Arena

Admission: $10

Information: (209) 373-1400

Tysse was weaned on Houston?s self-titled 1985 debut album ? and its three No. 1 singles ? while growing up in Maine and New Jersey.

?That really is what made me wanna sing,? said Tysse, who, like Houston, developed her powerful voice in church choirs. ?I never had any vocal training. Just Whitney.?

Tysse, a member of San Francisco?s Glide Memorial Church Choir, will perform in more secular surroundings tonight ? the King?s Room at Stockton Arena following the Thunder?s ice-hockey game.

Stockton bassist AJ Joyce plays part-time in Tysse?s band, but he?ll be there tonight.

Tysse, 36, introduces songs from ?Love Again,? her less-bluesy second album released on Nov. 29. Houston, who died on Feb. 11 at age 48, will be on her mind.

?Well, I have mixed emotions,? Tysse said of Houston, whose funeral is being held Saturday in Newark, N.J. ?Given what we know, nobody was that surprised. But it was so tragic the way her life went. Her talent was unparalleled. She could have continued so much further.?

Tysse?s taking a sightly different angle with her music, edging away from straight-up blues into a more pop-oriented mode.

She?s been working on the 13-track ?Love Again? since 2009, using lyrics written ?years and years ago.?

Tysse ?really belts out? some songs. Others are more subdued ballads: ?Some of them had been written five, six, 10 years ago and shelved. I just pulled ?em out. When we started, I didn?t expect it to come out like it has. The songwriting hadn?t fully developed.?

Those songs are mostly about ?one particularly bad time,? she said. ?A bad ending to a relationship. I got a lot of songs out of it. The whole album really kind of focuses on that. It?s about love and the heart, though. It?s not all ?woe is me.?

?My first album (?Real Good Fire,? 2007) was a little more blues-focused. This one?s a little less genre-specific. More funky. RB. Really, no blues.

?I?ve created something new that?s my own. Maybe not what the blues world expected it to be. What I created is something altogether new.?

Mike Blankenship, her band?s keyboard player, helped with that. A lot.

?We have a good working relationship,? she said of the Concord-based Blankenship. ?There are elements of RB. Also elements of, I?d call it pop, for lack of a better genre.?

While it?s not quite at the level of Adele?s Grammy Award-winning ?Someone Like You,? Tysse?s ?I Do,? a ballad, ?seems to get the most reaction,? she said. ?It was the most challenging to write, but it came out best. Everyone sort of has a song they like best. Like when they come up to me and start singing my songs to me.

?I?m not engaged or married. People ask, ?Who is it about?? It happens to not be about anyone. I didn?t really force the lyrics. It just came at one time. I don?t know why.?

She grew up singing in the United Methodist Church and has increased her vocal power and flexibility at Glide Memorial for 14 years.

?I love all types of music,? she said. ?From Joni Mitchell to Tupac. I just love good songs. I don?t wanna be stuck in any box. Ever. I?ll always love the blues.?

Born into a ?modest background? in Madison, Wis., she took piano lessons and taught herself to play trumpet at 7. An only child, she added vocals after she and her mom, Dorothy Breen, moved to Orono, Maine, following her parents? divorce.

Tysse also was a competitive swimmer, 100- and 300-meter hurdler and soccer player.

Her father, Paul, a grant writer at the University of Wisconsin, accompanied her on acoustic guitar ? folk and jazz tunes ? and further developed her skills with her grandmother in Ocean Grove, N.J.

She spent a year in Grenoble, France, where she sang in clubs. She attended the University of Vermont and lived in Boston for nine months before arriving in San Francisco.

?Love Again? is more than an album title. It?s also a form of ?giving back.?

Through the Love Again Project, Tysse donates income from some shows to charitable organizations ? ranging from the Humane Society of the Sierra Foothills to Glide Memorial Church, which benefits when Tysse formally releases ?Love Again? on Feb. 26 at Yoshi?s in San Francisco.

?I always wanted to somehow connect with giving back,? said Tysse, whose mother, a psychologist at the University of Maine, has been a do-good inspiration. ?I?m not able to contribute that much. I?m not Bonnie Raitt.

?I just hope by connecting I can at least give some exposure to these causes. It helps give meaning personally to what I?m doing. It?s so fulfilling. It?s such a blessing. Sometimes I just feel spoiled. Not that it?s easy, but it?s not like other people making a bazillion dollars will do something.?

Houston?s contribution was inspiration: ?She was the one.?
