Some in Conn. town couple activism with mourning

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? People drawn to Newtown to share in its mourning brought cards and handmade snowflakes to town Monday while residents prepared to observe Christmas less than two weeks after a gunman killed 20 children and six educators at an elementary school.

On Christmas Eve, residents said they would light luminaries outside their homes in memory of the victims. Tiny empty Christmas stockings with the victims' names on them hung from trees in the neighborhood where the children were shot.

"We know that they'll feel loved. They'll feel that somebody actually cares," said Treyvon Smalls, a 15-year-old from a few towns away who arrived at town hall with hundreds of cards and paper snowflakes collected from around the state.

Organizers said they wanted to let the families of victims know they are not alone while also giving Connecticut children a chance to express their feelings about the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

At the Trinity Episcopal Church, less than 2 miles from the school, an overflow crowd of several hundred people attended Christmas Eve services. They were greeted by the sounds of a children's choir echoing throughout a sanctuary hall that had its walls decorated with green wreaths adorned with red bows.

The church program said flowers were donated in honor of Sandy Hook shooting victims, identified by name or as the "school angels" and "Sandy Hook families."

The service, which generally took on a celebratory tone, made only a few vague references to the shooting. Pastor Kathie Adams-Shepherd led the congregation in praying "that the joy and consolation of the wonderful counselor might enliven all who are touched by illness, danger, or grief, especially all those families affected by the shootings in Sandy Hook."

Police say the gunman killed his mother in her bed before his Dec. 14 rampage and committed suicide as he heard officers arriving. Authorities have yet to give a theory about his motive.

While the grief is still fresh, some residents are urging political activism in the wake of the tragedy. A grassroots group called Newtown United has been meeting at the library to talk about issues ranging from gun control, to increasing mental health services to the types of memorials that could be erected for the victims. Some clergy members have said they also intend to push for change.

"We seek not to be the town of tragedy," said Rabbi Shaul Praver of Congregation Adath Israel. "But, we seek to be the town where all the great changes started."

Since the shooting, messages similar to the ones delivered Monday have arrived from around the world. People have donated toys, books, money and more. A United Way fund, one of many, has collected $3 million. People have given nearly $500,000 to a memorial scholarship fund at the University of Connecticut. On Christmas Day, police from other towns have agreed to work so Newtown officers can have the time off.

In the center of Newtown's Sandy Hook section Monday, a steady stream of residents and out-of-towners snapped pictures, lit candles and dropped off children's gifts at an expansive memorial filled with stuffed animals, poems, flowers, posters and cards.

"All the families who lost those little kids, Christmas will never be the same," said Philippe Poncet, a Newtown resident originally from France. "Everybody across the world is trying to share the tragedy with our community here."

Richard Scinto, a deacon at St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church, which was attended by eight children killed in the massacre, said the church's pastor, Rev. Robert Weiss, used several eulogies this week to tell his congregation to get angry and take action against what some consider is a culture of gun violence in the country.

Praver and Scinto said they are not opposed to hunting or to having police in schools, but both said something must be done to change what has become a culture of violence in the United States.

"These were his mother's guns," Scinto said. "Why would anyone want an assault rifle as part of a private citizen collection?"

A mediator who worked with gunman Adam Lanza's parents during their divorce has said Lanza, 20, was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, an autism-like disorder that is not associated with violence. It is not known whether he had other mental health issues. The guns used in the shooting had been purchased legally by his mother, Nancy Lanza, a gun enthusiast.

Gun control and mental health have also been topics at Newtown United meetings, along with what types of memorials would be most appropriate and any other action residents can take to feel like they are doing something.

"We don't want Newtown to go on the list with Columbine, Tucson and Virginia Tech and only have it associated with horrible acts," said Lee Shull, who moderated a Newton United meeting just days after the shootings. "We want to turn this into something positive. What can we do?"

A handful of people showed up to the group's first meeting at the town library two days after the Dec. 14 shooting. The next night, 35 attended, most scrawling ideas and notes on white paper covering the tables. A few days later there was barely room to maneuver around the meeting room when two guests showed up: Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Sen.-elect Chris Murphy, Connecticut Democrats who told the group they planned to push for gun control legislation and needed their constituents to help them press the issue in Washington.

The group sees itself as a way to spark a local and national dialogue and action in the aftermath of a tragedy. It's also a way to do something, anything, to cope with the sadness that has settled over Newtown.

Said resident John Neuhall: "Our hearts are broken wide open and we're here out of grief and out of love for those families."

BETHLEHEM, West Bank (AP) ? The top Roman Catholic cleric in the Holy Land celebrated the United Nations' recent recognition of a Palestinian state in his annual pre-Christmas homily on Monday, saying that while the road to actual freedom from Israeli occupation remains long, the Palestinian homeland has been born.

Latin Patriarch Fouad Twal told followers at the patriarchate's headquarters in Jerusalem's Old City that this year's festivities were doubly joyful, celebrating "the birth of Christ our Lord and the birth of the state of Palestine."

"The path (to statehood) remains long, and will require a united effort," added Twal, a Palestinian citizen of Jordan.

From Jerusalem, he set off in a procession for the West Bank city of Bethlehem, Jesus' traditional birthplace. There, he was reminded that life on the ground for Palestinians has not really changed since the U.N. recognized their state last month in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem and the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.

Twal had to enter the biblical city through a massive metal gate in the barrier of towering concrete slabs Israel built between Jerusalem and Bethlehem during a wave of Palestinian suicide bombings in the last decade.

Israel, backed by the United States, opposed the statehood bid, saying it was a Palestinian ploy to bypass negotiations. Talks stalled four years ago, primarily over Israel's construction in the West Bank and east Jerusalem, territories Israel occupied in the 1967 Mideast war.

Israel has rejected the Palestinians' demand that it freeze all construction before they will renew talks, and launched a major settlement building push in retaliation for the successful statehood bid.

Hundreds of people were on hand to greet Twal in Manger Square, outside the Church of Nativity. The mood was festive under sunny skies, with children dressed in holiday finery or in Santa costumes, and marching bands playing in the streets.

A lavishly decorated 55-foot (25-meter) fir tree with a nativity scene at its foot dominated the plaza. Festivities were to culminate with Midnight Mass at the Church of the Nativity, built over the grotto where tradition says Jesus was born.

Devout Christians said it was a moving experience to be so close to the origins of their faith.

"It's a special feeling to be here, it's an encounter with my soul and God," said Joanne Kurczewska, a professor at Warsaw University in Poland, who was visiting Bethlehem for a second time at Christmas.

Christmas is the high point of the year in Bethlehem, which, like the rest of the West Bank, is struggling to recover from the economic hard times that followed the violent Palestinian uprising against Israel that broke out in late 2000.

Tourists and pilgrims who had been scared away by the fighting have been returning in larger numbers. Last year's Christmas Eve celebration produced the highest turnout in more than a decade, with some 100,000 visitors, including foreign workers and Arab Christians from Israel.

The Israeli Tourism Ministry predicts a 25 percent drop from that level this year, following last month's clash between Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza, which put a chill on tourist arrivals. Foreign tourists heading to Bethlehem must pass through Israel or the Israel-controlled border crossing into the West Bank from Jordan.

Official: Navy SEAL commander died of apparent suicide

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. military officials are investigating the apparent suicide of a Navy SEAL commander in Afghanistan.

Navy SEAL Cdr. Job W. Price, 42, of Pottstown, Pa., died Saturday of a non-combat-related injury while supporting stability operations in Uruzgan Province, Afghanistan.

A U.S. military official said the death "appears to be the result of suicide." The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the death is still being investigated.

"The Naval Special Warfare family is deeply saddened by the loss of our teammate," said Capt. Robert Smith, Commander of Naval Special Warfare Group Two, which manages all Virginia-based Navy SEAL teams. "We extend our condolences, thoughts and prayers to the family, friends, and NSW community during this time of grieving."

"As we mourn the loss and honor the memory of our fallen teammate, those he served with will continue to carry out the mission," Smith added Sunday.

A U.S. military official confirmed Price was from Virginia Beach, Va.-based SEAL Team 4, which is part of the mission to train Afghan local police to stave off the Taliban in remote parts of Afghanistan. Price is survived by a wife and a daughter.

One is a black leather swimsuit-like number accessorized by a half-cowboy-chap-type adornment on one leg; another is a lacy set of white lingerie over which Ke$ha wears a furry white caplet/mini shawl on her back.?

::?Vulture, perhaps wisely, considered all of the factors in the video and compiled a list of things to avoid if trying not to die young: ?Herewith, a not-at-all-comprehensive list of situations and dangers that one should probably avoid if one is concerned with early mortality: satanic cults; skull and crossbone signs; creepy warehouses that lack a functioning door; chair-smashing; activities that require one to send a text message reading, ?We made it South of the Border?; eagles (or condors, or whatever that was); dirty mattresses; being lifted up in the air like a sacrificial lamb by a group of people who are clearly distracted; wolves.?

Pouting her lips, tossing her hair and basically looking like a dirty David Yurman model. A dirty and super hot David Yurman model mind you.?

::?Billboard?also thought the Illuminati imagery was fairly explicit, but that wasn?t a problem: ?With tons of blatant Illuminati imagery and some sort of illegal orgy going on, the clip (released on Thursday, Nov. 8) takes the singer?s button-pushing ability to dizzying new heights.?As Ke$ha and her pals head to Mexico, Illuminati symbols ? the all-seeing one eye, the upside-down cross, and so, so many triangle ? pop up amongst the fun. ?We made it? SOUTH OF THE BORDER? they?ll never find us here,? reads a text, sent by Ke$ha to some unknown party apparently interested in some choreographed sexuality.?

::?MTV Buzzworthy?had even more references still, but seemed tickled by the clip?s madcap style:??Tucked away somewhere in an abandoned jungle warehouse, Cult Ke$ha HQ is decorated with a crap-ton of?satanic imagery?and other things you might only see in The Craft?sequel. Or True Blood.?Or a Wiccan documentary. Whichever. Fortunately, all of the?Warrior?singer?s fellow cult members happen to be hot male models (best cult evar!!) who spend their days doting on Ke$ha and making sure all her ?needs? are taken care of.?

On Language, Texting, & Being | Thought Catalog

I can speak some French. I took it all through school but learned it mostly when writing my dissertation which involved several French books that were, at the time, not yet translated. And for the books that were translated, I read the French not for accuracy per se but to get a sense for the writing ? its style, its rhythm, its?mode of being.?

Now,?I love translations. I find the act of translation as amazing and erotic (such intimacy with another) as it is impossible (however actual). Nevertheless, the two books side by side ? one in English, the other in French ? are two different characters.

Anyway, at that point, my French wasn?t terrible (this was 15 years ago). But I refused to speak it. Uttering the words contorted my body, and my self, in ways that just never felt right. Even before hearing the words leave my mouth, as my mind and throat and mouth twisted and pleated to mutter, ?Oui, et tu?? everything in me would begin to recoil as if I?d ingested some poison.

We imagine, perhaps, that language is a tool much as, say, a hammer is. I want to express myself so I grab this or that word and,?voil?, I?ve communicated.

But that?s not how language works. Language inhabits us, infiltrating our thoughts and bodies, coercing ideas and movements, choreographing our experiences. This is why?William Burroughs calls language a virus:?it lives in us, it needs us, it feeds on us. No, language is not a tool: it is a miasmatic, hegemonic control force.

And each language is different, asks different things of us ? the French?tu?wants something different from me than the German?du?and, in the process,?makes?something different of me. In college, my friend Matthew took the intro to several languages. In each class, students chose a name in the language of that class and Matt, to get in character, chose a different name for each. Walking through campus with him was strange as random students would address him alternately as Wolfgang, Wang, Esteban, Pierre, Achmed.

When I was in grad school, I had to prove proficiency in two languages so, other than French, I chose classical Greek. Or, rather, I tried to.

Berkeley has these language workshops over the summer. The Greek workshop is, in very small, nerdy circles, legendary.? The class meets six hours a day, five days a week, for 10 weeks. That?s not so bad until you take into consideration the homework ? it takes another 4-6 hours a day. I, of course, didn?t believe them when they told me this. If they say 4-6, they really mean around two hours, maybe. I?ve always been fast like that.

Oh, was I wrong. Classical Greek is a beast of, well, mythological proportions, endlessly inflected with only general rules to guide you. So you simply have to memorize them all (simple, yes; easy, no ? a crucial distinction). And it tore me asunder. In three days. At the end of which, I found myself on a curb, weeping. I?m not kidding. The language wanted all of me. It was literally killing me. So I took German ? four hours a day, five days a week, eight weeks. And about an hour of homework. Really.

Now, after Greek, German was easy. Still, I found it exceedingly difficult to speak ? not because it?s a hard language but because I couldn?t find myself in it. It wanted me to be something else, someone else. As the class involved a lot of conversation, this posed a particular challenge for me.

So I let the German wind through me until it found a voice. And what it found, to this day, surprises me: it found some fey, Weimar, proto-SS gay dude. All semester, I spoke German in this demented drawl verging on falsetto. My classmates, I assume, loathed me ? and rightfully so. I?m not sure where it even came from ? some distant memory of watching?Cabaret?

Which brings me to textese ? that language of abbreviation, icons, and emoticons: LOL, brb, ppl, diff, probly, u. Now, I love much of this language. Or, rather, I love that this language exists, that one language has been distributed by a technology and birthed a new language, a language within the language. But of course that?s all language is: lots of little languages (Deleuze and Guattari might call these ?minor? languages).

There are people who mock and disdain textese as some sort of bastardization or dumbing down. That?s absurd and, well, stupid. There is no such thing as ?real? language. So much of the so-called grammatical rules are arbitrary or, rather, ideological. They try to keep subjects in their place and everything qualified just so with nothing left to dangle. So-called proper English is uptight, antiquated bourgeois English.? It?s meant to be broken, tweaked, distorted for other ends and purposes. Enter textese.

And yet I refrain from ?speaking? this minor language. I type out ?you? and ?people? and ?probably.? I don?t write, LOL. I write, ?That?s hilarious.? At least usually I do. I have found that occasion has demanded something different so I?ve been know to write, ?Ha!? Which is my attempt at finding myself amidst these currents of SMS.

My resistance is neither ideological nor aesthetic. I have no moral problem with textese and I find much of its patois charming. No, I can?t do it for the same reason I can?t speak French: textese wants me to be something, to be someone, I am not. A 23 year old girl? A high school dude from Fremont? I don?t know. But I do know that it has yet to find a place within me.

And so, perhaps foolishly, I am left typing the language of textese?s more formal forefathers. But such is my character: I like to sprawl, to whisper asides, to carry on in would-be purple splendor. And textese, for all its charms, will not have none of that. Alas, then, I speak what I am. And vice versa.?

That demand leads to higher employment rates, more money in pockets, and more consumption. Billionaire Nick Hanauer had it right when he said he was not a job creator. He said the middle class is the job creator in its quest for products and services. </p><p>Another point, if I recall correctly, the Clinton presidency had much higher tax rates, AND it had much better job growth and a better economy. return false;' target='_blank' title='Share to Facebook'><span class='share-button-link-text'>Share to Facebook</span></a><a class='goog-inline-block share-button sb-pinterest' href='https://www.blogger.com/share-post.g?blogID=3548301435447175862&postID=6751991676682151323&target=pinterest' target='_blank' title='Share to Pinterest'><span class='share-button-link-text'>Share to Pinterest</span></a> </div> </div> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-2'> <span class='post-labels'> </span> </div> <div class='post-footer-line post-footer-line-3'> <span class='post-location'> </span> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class='post-outer'> <div class='post hentry uncustomized-post-template' itemprop='blogPost' itemscope='itemscope' itemtype='http://schema.org/BlogPosting'> <meta content='3548301435447175862' itemprop='blogId'/> <meta content='8002097242357864212' itemprop='postId'/> <a name='8002097242357864212'></a> <h3 class='post-title entry-title' itemprop='name'> <a href='https://decor-flambeed.blogspot.com/2012/11/gilead-posts-positive-results-in-mid.html'>Gilead posts positive results in mid-stage Hepatitis C study</a> </h3> <div class='post-header'> <div class='post-header-line-1'></div> </div> <div class='post-body entry-content' id='post-body-8002097242357864212' itemprop='description articleBody'> <p class="first">(Reuters) - <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352571308_0">Gilead Sciences Inc</span> on Saturday reported a 100 percent cure rate using a combination of drugs in a small number of patients with the most common and hardest to treat form of <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352571308_4">hepatitis C</span>.</p> <p> <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352571308_1">Rival Abbott Laboratories Inc</span>, meanwhile, said a trio of its oral medicines to treat hepatitis C produced unprecedented cure rates in a larger number of patients who had failed to benefit from standard treatment, as well as very high cure rates for newly treated patients.</p> <p> Data from both companies' mid-stage trials were released Saturday at the annual meeting of the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352571308_2">American Association for the Study of Liver Disease</span> in Boston.</p> <p> Gilead's study, dubbed Electron, examined 25 patients with genotype 1 <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352571308_7">chronic hepatitis C virus</span> (HCV) infection who were treated for 12 weeks with a combination of three drugs: sofosbuvir, <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352571308_8">ribavirin</span> and GS-5885.</p> <p> GS-5885 is from a promising new class of drugs known as NS5A inhibitors, which prevent the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352571308_3">hepatitis C virus</span> from replicating.</p> <p> The infection was undetectable four weeks after completing therapy in all of the patients who had never received this combination of drugs before, Gilead said.</p> <p> The drugs generally were well tolerated in the study, Gilead said.</p> <p> In the sofosbuvir combined with GS-5885 and ribavirin patient groups, one patient dropped out because of an adverse side effect that the company said was unrelated to the drugs.</p> <p> Sofosbuvir and GS-5885 are still being studied for their safety and efficacy.</p> <p> The biopharmaceutical company will present the data on Tuesday at the annual meeting of the <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352571308_6">American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases</span> in Boston.</p> <p> Mark Schoenebaum, a biotech analyst with ISI Group, said in a research note that he expects Gilead shares to rise on Monday based on these "best case" results.</p> <p> UBS analyst Matthew Roden said "these data strongly support Gilead's leadership position" in the hepatitis C virus space.</p> <p> Gilead recently started the first Phase 3 trial evaluating a fixed-dose combination of sofosbuvir and GS-5885 in patients with genotype 1 <span class="yshortcuts" id="lw_1352571308_5">chronic hepatitis C virus infection</span> who had not received these drugs before.</p> <p> This study is evaluating the fixed-dose combination with and without ribavirin for 12- and 24-weeks in 800 patients, 20 percent of whom have evidence of cirrhosis, or liver scarring.</p> <p> (Reporting By Debra Sherman; The same CEO who suggested installing pay toilets on planes is now revisiting the idea of standing-room-only sections on flights and dissing the safety feature fliers use most.</p><p>?Seat?belts don't matter,? Michael O?Leary told The Telegraph. ?If there ever was a crash on an aircraft, God forbid, a seat?belt won?t save you.?</p><p>O?Leary is reportedly on a quest to take out the back ten rows of seats on planes so that Ryanair could offer tickets for one pound (about $1.60) to budget travelers willing to spend a flight on their feet in a ?standing cabin.? The Irish airline is already known for its rock-bottom fares and extensive menu of fees for everything from early boarding to excess baggage.<br/></p><p>What about the safety of passengers not buckled in? O?Leary told the paper they could just ?hang on to the handle? when necessary and would be ?fine,? adding that there?s little turbulence in Europe to worry about. People traveling by subway or train don?t wear seat?belts, he pointed out.</p><p>"The problem with aviation is that for 50 years it's been populated by people who think it's this wondrous sexual experience; that it's like James Bond and wonderful and we'll all be flying first class when really it's just a?...?bus with wings,? O?Leary told The Telegraph.</p><p>"If you say to passengers it's ?25 for the seat and ?1 for the standing cabin, I guarantee we will sell the standing cabin first.?</p><p>Don?t count on such a cabin ever showing up on any airline in any part of the world, said Todd Curtis, a former Boeing engineer and founder of AirSafe.com. </p><p>?What (O?Leary) was saying about getting rid of seat?belts is a non-starter, it?s not realistic, it?s not going to be acceptable to the regulatory authorities,? Curtis told NBC News, adding that he got a chuckle out of O?Leary?s comments.</p><p>Seat belts keep passengers safe during turbulence, which can strike unexpectedly and can even happen when the sky appears to be clear, the Federal?Aviation?Administration says. About 58 people are injured in such bumpy rides each year in the United States while not buckled in, according to government statistics.</p><p>The FAA requires fliers to have their seat belts fastened when the plane leaves the gate, as it climbs after take-off, during landing and taxi, and whenever the seat belt sign is illuminated during flight. Airlines also often recommend that you stay buckled in at all times, because you never know when something will happen, Curtis added.<br/></p><p>Turbulence isn't always the culprit: In 2008, dozens of passengers were hurt when a computer malfunction sent a Qantas flight into a sudden dive, Curtis pointed out.</p><p>Then, there?s the issue of O?Leary?s hypothetical standing-room-only section being located in the back of the plane, which is usually the bumpiest section of the cabin, boosting the chances of passengers losing their balance or falling down, Curtis said.<br/></p><p>So while O?Leary may be right that flying has become less glamorous and more routine, air travel safety requirements remain the same, he added.</p><p>?The basic conditions under which aircraft fly haven?t changed,? Curtis said. ?The need for (seat belts) won?t change.?</p><p>O?Leary is known for saying or suggesting controversial things that get lots of publicity for Ryanair. In September, he called passengers who fail to print their Ryanair boarding passes ?stupid.?</p><p>In 2010, O?Leary suggested getting rid of co-pilots on planes to save money. Then, of course, there was the idea of charging passengers one euro to use the lavatory on flights lasting 60 to 90 minutes.</p><p>In 2009, the airline also brought up the notion of collecting a ?fat tax? from overweight passengers.</p><p>None of those ideas have been implemented.<br/></p><p>Despite Ryanair's penny-pinching ways and the outrage it often causes, the airline attracts lots of customers. Low antioxidant levels contribute to increased blood pressure during exercise for people with peripheral arterial disease, according to researchers at Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute.</p> <p>Peripheral arterial disease, or PAD, affects an estimated 10 million Americans and increases the chance of death from a cardiovascular event. Reduced blood flow causes pain in the legs and increases blood pressure in people who have PAD. However, the causes of the disease are unknown.</p> <p>"Past studies have shown that having low antioxidant levels and increased reactive oxygen species -- chemical products that bind to body cells and cause damage -- is related to more severe PAD," said Matthew Muller, postdoctoral fellow in Larry Sinoway's lab at Penn State College of Medicine, and lead author of the study.</p> <p>Antioxidants prevent the reactive oxygen species from damaging cells.</p> <p>"This study shows that blood pressure increases more with exercise in more severe PAD cases. By infusing the antioxidant vitamin C into the blood, we were able to lessen the increase in blood pressure during exercise," said Muller.</p> <p>Vitamin C does not lessen the increase in blood pressure of PAD patients to that of healthy people. As the intensity of exercise increases, the effects of vitamin C decrease but are still seen. The researchers report their findings in the <em>Journal of Physiology</em>.</p> <p>Penn State Hershey researchers looked at three groups of PAD patients to study the blood pressure increase. A group of 13 PAD patients was compared to people without PAD to see the effects of doing low-intensity exercise on blood pressure. From that group, a second group of nine patients was used to measure the effects of vitamin C. A third group of five PAD patients and five without PAD had their leg muscles electrically stimulated to remove the brain's role in raising blood pressure during muscle contraction in this disease.</p> <p>Increased blood pressure during exercise occurs in both legs, before pain begins, and relates to the severity of the disease. By using electrical stimulation, the scientists show that the blood pressure increase comes from the muscle itself, since the brain is not telling the leg to contract and the pressure still increases.</p> <p>"This indicates that during normal, everyday activities such as walking, an impaired antioxidant system -- as well as other factors -- plays a role in the increased blood pressure response to exercise," Muller said. "Therefore, supplementing the diet with antioxidants may help these patients, but more studies are needed to confirm this concept."</p> <p>Other researchers are Rachel C. Drew, postdoctoral fellow; Cheryl A. Blaha, research coordinator; Jessica L. Mast, research coordinator; Jian Cui, associate professor of medicine; and Amy B. Syrian state media say a judge has been assassinated in a residential neighborhood of Damascus.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">The state-run SANA news agency says a "terrorist group" planted explosives under the car of judge Abad Nadhwah in the Barzeh neighborhood of the Syrian capital. The bomb was detonated remotely, killing him instantly.</p><p class="ap_para ap_para-d57851005a80479aaeeb90a12c70b9f6 entry-content">Wednesday's blast is the latest in a wave of assassinations targeting high-ranking supporters of President Bashar Assad's regime.
